So how can you train at a technical level professionally outside of university?

Here we are not inventing the wheel, in fact, the method that we are going to propose has been the main method used by both the great academies and the small ateliers of important masters throughout the centuries.

What is the Atelier method?

The Atelier method is a method by which the teaching of a master is transmitted to the student/apprentice. It emerged around the 17th century and later became the method most used by great masters such as John Singer Sargent, Joshua Reynolds or Thomas Lawrence.

Can you imagine what the workshop of Velázquez or Leonardo or Caravaggio would be like in the 21st century?

How does the program work?

You start with simple exercises that we progressively complicate . The main objective is that you learn, at your own pace, the basic concepts and how to apply them .

It is a 100% practical method. Most of your time is spent in front of your easel. Doing different exercises. Practice is really important. Just as a musician educates his ear, we are going to educate your eyes first and then teach your hand to obey.

In each session the teacher gives you feedback and/or practical demonstrations on the exercise you are working on. The idea is to show you the errors and how to improve them, as well as explore possible solutions with you. Plural solutions. Because each problem does not have a unique way to be solved. As you can imagine, seeing the different options will allow you greater flexibility when working.

What will your day to day be like at the MAA?

At the MAA we have two schedule options. The morning schedule (from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) and the afternoon schedule (from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.).

If you come in the morning, this will be your agenda:

  • 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Plates, plasters, master copies or still lifes (Cast Room) 3 times a week and Sculpture (Conservatory Room) 2 times a week 11:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. – BREAK (Chill out Room)
  • 11.40 to 14.00 – Figure Pose (Model Room)
  • 14.00 to 15.00 – LUNCH (Chill out Room)

From 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., you can stay at the Academy doing your projects, doing homework, watching tutorials on our mega screen or reviewing library books, and if there are free easels, you can join pose with model.

They are people who do not like the human figure, for example, and prefer to combine colors in a landscape, they have fun with it and they are not interested in anything else…”

Because in the end, if you let yourself be guided by another person, sometimes it is not a fun thing. It is not: “how beautiful this painting has been!”. You can join the program in October or at the beginning of each month. The minimum enrollment period for any program is always one quarter[3 meses] . The academic year lasts 9 months, beginning in October and ending in June, both months included.

Why this academy if there are other cheaper ones?

That is a good question. The step you are going to take involves a considerable investment of time and money. I recommend you check other academies to make sure that this is really your academy. Is it a good investment? Again, our students give you their opinion

“It’s a lot of money and obviously not everyone can afford it. And I feel quite privileged to be able to pay for it and thus be able to maintain a normal life, without luxuries, but normal. And it’s not expensive. The service as such, the new facilities, the hours you can have a day with a model, if you attend in the morning and in the afternoon… You can’t find that anywhere. You can find similar things, but not everything in one place, it’s not expensive, I think it’s very good…”

For example, there are people who pay a lot of money for a home that is not going to give them as much satisfaction as the time one spends here drawing and painting, it depends on your preference, on what makes you happy…”

“It requires you to have some savings, to have an economic cushion, even if you need to leave your job for a while to be able to support yourself with those savings. But it’s worth it. It’s worth it because it’s not money wasted by the academy. When will you notice the progress?

In the first few months you usually notice progress almost daily. There is much to learn and to improve. But each person is a world. That is why we have asked our students to tell you about their experience

“Yes, it shows. When I get home and I see old drawings that I used to do and I see them now… oh my! And in such a short time. I have been here for 3 months and 2 weeks and I ask myself, how have I been able to learn so much in such a short time? Is studying a method going to cut off your creativity?

Much has been said about this topic and it seemed important to us to pose this question to our students so that they could give their opinion based on their experience. We have collected their answers for you.

It depends on oneself, because the method is not an end in itself, it is only a tool, not an end. If there are people who study in academies and then do not do creative work, it is their problem, I think, it is not a consequence of studying in an academy. You have examples of former students who do an amazing work and others who just stay doing long poses, and that’s it, and that’s what they like to do and there they stay…”

“If someone wants to make a nice drawing, just a nice drawing, you can teach him everything that he is going to make a drawing that is beautiful for him and that’s it. It can be academic or it can be of another style, but it will be just as empty, which I think will be the problem. You can share the part of creativity but that the other person knows how to appreciate it is something else…”

“You have to first think about why you draw or why you want to learn. If you want to learn because you want a beautiful drawing to come out and that’s it, and brag about it, the academy does nothing for you to lose creativity, it’s just not your concern. But if you want to do work and use the method as a tool, the academy will help you because it will be easier for you, you will know the elements with which to play and guide your expressiveness…”

You have creativity, you want it and you look for it. And if you are creative you are going to show it because you cannot avoid it. And even if you respect and do what they are asking you at school, you are going to get home and you are going to do what your body asks of you and you are going to create. Here, at school, we are learning, we are not creating, and it is good to be clear, because this is not a purpose but a little help for your development…”

Could you get to the same place by studying on your own?

Maybe yes. The Internet already provides more than enough information. But sometimes information alone is not enough. A structured methodology, teachers giving you personalized feedback, natural models, colleagues with whom to share experiences, artists making demos and answering your questions… Time in the academy beats at a different rhythm…

“I’m sure it’s more difficult because you’re going to make a lot more mistakes and it’s going to take longer to specify an address and a path, and you’re going to waste time and probably get somewhere, but you’re going to arrive later and more tired. . The MAA program is much more direct than anything else I can find right now…”

“Because of my way of being self-demanding, I went looking for a bit of that knowledge that I lacked and dedicated time to it. What’s up? He told me: “I see that you are reaching a limit and you say, well this is it, and what I do is push you further, against that limit so that you cross it”. I think that you need someone to do it, you are not going to do it. When they teach you what is logical, what is the path, you already know that it is there…”

Do you have to spend a lot of time on it?

Yes, you have to spend time on it. The great masters started out making pitiful pictures, practiced until they made decent pictures, practiced until they made excellent pictures, and practiced until their works seemed to be touched by the hand of God. They practiced and learned.

“Personally, having a job that has good hours has allowed me to dedicate many afternoons and many weekends to this. This will be your diploma, when you finish the program

Although you will have your diploma when you finish your studies, the most important thing will be your portfolio, your work will be your best letter of reference

MAA programs are not government-approved programs, so you will not have an official diploma.

Even so, our academy is a school registered with the Art Renewal Center (an American association in charge of promoting professional academic education), so when you finish your studies, you will receive your own diploma with the seal of the Madrid Academy of Art and that of the Art Renewal Center.
